Digging into the ground can only continue so far before the endeavours must progress into trench or tunnel work. Once a legion has reached 12ft below the specified digging localepoint, a trench must be created in order for the digging to continue.
Syntax: ... APPROACH DIGGING
The "digging" approach is required for all terrain work involving a descent into the ground. Ensure this is in place else your legionnaires will be delayed.
Syntax: ... TRENCH CREATE
When standing in a localepoint of sufficient depth (12 feet below ground level), this order (providing the legion is equipped with scaffolds) commands the legion to extend the depth into the beginnings of a trench, from which the legion may continue digging and eventually progress into tunnelwork.
Syntax: ... TRENCH ASCEND/DESCEND [direction]
Using the "trenches" specialist-skill this order tells a legion to either ascend out from a trench, aiming to emerge in the specified direction from the trench's entrypoint in the destination locale; or tells it to descend into a trench either immediately nearby or in a specified direction in the locale. TRENCH ASCEND/DESCEND when a direction is specified performs an automatic STEP at the same time as climbing in and out of the trench. Ladders may be required if the distance being attempted exceeds a difference of 10 feet between localepoints.
NOTE: It is necessary to descend into a trench in order for a legion to continue digging it and progress to tunnel work.
Syntax: ... WIDEN or WIDEN HERE or WIDEN <compass direction>
When the WIDEN command is issued at the foot of a completed trench - twenty feet below the surface of a location - it will widen the trench out beyond it being merely an addendum to the surface (a place to hide, to launch ambushes, etc) and transform it into a brand new location with nine localepoints. The new location will be known as 'Foot of a trench below [the surface location]' and it is from here, sufficiently deep and sufficiently secure, that a legion may begin to tunnel.
