Playing To Win - But Against Which Opposition?

Who is the opposition? Are you playing Avalon to win against players whom you see as rivals or is it win at all costs with the game itself first and foremost opponent, to be expoited in any way allowed (avoid punishment, avoid being caught).

Does winning coming through cheating - assume nobody knows or will EVER know - does counts as winning same as had it been won fairly?
