The sun in the heavens is a guardian of certain standards of behaviour and though seldom does she notice a particular mortal, when she notices, she can be harsh in her reaction.
If you are noticed swearing repeatedly on public channels, shouts, or heard by younger players (LWs and MWs) then the chance of being noticed is much increased. If you spam swearing or bad behaviour - if it occurs so often it cannot be ignored - then you will be noticed.
Being noticed will cause a sunbeam punishment. This fatal strike during the daytime and is somewhat similar to the godly zap: it is an inescapable flare of concentrated sunlight against the individual noticed, blowing him or her to pieces and ensuring the need for a ship-ride.
Under normal circumstances it will be a case of once noticed, once punished, then forgiven. The sun bears no grudge nor will she direct her wrath at anyone choosing to resurrect the offender; even if the offender is a repeat abuser.
If you persist, however, in incurring the wrath of the golden sun - if you spam others or swear persistently repeatedly or - let's call a spade a spade - if you act like an idiot over a mechanism intended to make the environment more pleasant for everyone, then you risk being autoatically branded with "turd" status. This only occurs under the aforementioned circumstances.
If you are branded a "turd" you will ALWAYS noticed when swearing publicly and instead of a single punishment, "turds" are lovingly rewarded with one to four fatal strikes per spamming/repeat-obscenity infraction. Why would anyone invite such an outcome?
The "turd" status wears away if the player manages to keep from spamming or public obscenity and indeed the status is rescinded at midnight for all. The former "turd" once normal will be judged by regular standards. There is no lingering stench.
NOTE: mortals may appeal to the Gods - to their divine patron in particular - for an early cleansing of past 'sins' against the public sensibility, i..e. removal of "turd" status. This will be up to the individual deity. Cleansing erases all history of 'being noticed' and removes any unfulfilled sunbeam strikes, restoring normality for the offending player. It is a simple feature all in all.
