Gems, great, terrific, wonderful but I never really saw the point of giving the supposed best fighters in the land more powers.

Gems should be fought for and won, by fighters or by pacifists because they wish a chance at ordination not because they can augment their arsenal.

But, then again, remove the associated powers and i suppose we'd suddenly find far fewer people actually competing for the prestige associated with them.
