Every single one of my enemies, when they do kill me, kills my steed instantly. Every one of them. It is avalon.
The only reason why I kill steeds is because it is a strategic move. Being mounted can cause my enemy to be twice as hard to kill, so if he has no mount, I gain an advantage.
The thing is, if you are that worried about a mount, don't take it somewhere were you may die. I don't, and if I lapse and mistankingly get it killed, I sure don't bitch about it. But that is me.
