Certain professions, such as thieves and seers, are more effective in combat when they do not challenge.
Knights and others may challenge, and call it honour or whatever else is necessary to use it as a tool for drawing out a thief or seer, but the more shadowy professions have no obligation to weaken their attack by announcing their presence or intentio
ns to the entire world.
I'd never expect a thief to challenge before attacking me, and I would probably only challenge a thief if I were being beaten by one, and wished to claim higher moral ground in lieu of being able to defeat the thief on his own terms.
Likewise, I would only openly challenge a knight or mage instead of simply attacking them if I had so little respect for them that I knew I could ship them even on their own toe-to-toe terms instead of my terms.
Just random thoughts about challenges, obviously not the law.
