If you wish to help a novice without fear of attack, then use the command GUIDE novice this gives you temporary protection from all attacks (very similar to the divine protection offered after a ride on the ship, i believe.)

Detailed information is available in the Avalon manual, which really should be read thoroughly by all novices before kicking up a stink about something so easily prevented.
